KAOnauts (GM Matt's Group #04) Player Narrative

Post by Brykovian » Tue Jun 03, 2003 2:34 pm

Here's what the player's were given as a starting storyline ...

You woke up with a good feeling that day. (Man, first impressions can be quite wrong sometimes!) It was the first break you had gotten in a while from the seemingly constant battles. As an experienced warrior in the World of Kaomaris, you knew that you needed to take advantage of days like that: tend to your injuries, rest up your sore muscles, feed and water your horse, and nudge your armor and weapons back into top form.

You had slept late for once, which felt quite good. And you were just getting dressed, with plans to head over to the mess for a hearty breakfast and lighthearted conversation with some other fighters happy to have the day off. When suddenly (and it always seems to happen suddenly, doesn't it?) the sky turned black ... actually EVERYTHING turned black ... for just a few seconds. Then the light returned.

But you were no longer in your quarters. Instead, you were standing in a room that seemed to be made out of metal. There were many busy people moving about the room, along with metal boxes with different colored lights, making strange noises. The busy people all seemed very interested in those blinking, beeping boxes. But you couldn't take your eyes off of the many windows on the far side of the room. Outside the room, everything was black, with what seemed to be stars all around. And toward the right side of that far wall, you could see what looked to be land and water far, far below you.

One other person in the room was stand still too, though. And she was simply staring at you from a few feet to your left. "Commander?" she finally said. "How should we proceed?"

You shook your head, then rubbed the top of it. "Huh?" was all you could manage.

"The staff is awaying your orders. The Starfleet is completely at your command," she said with a tone of not liking to repeat herself. "How should we proceed?"

Here is where the players are encouraged to continue the story from their own in-game character's point of view ...

Calidus cautiously began to take in his surroundings. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out he was no longer in his keep. Too much noise for one thing. I mean seriously, if it wasn't the sound of ten thousand soldiers after a mighty battle, then it was just noise to calidus.

"We shall proceed to build the strongest army, and wipe the scum that dares to stand in our way from the face of kao.....ere, from the face of the GALAXY!" roared Calidus, thrusting his arms in the air. (That speech ALWAYS fires up the men, thought Calidus, grinning)

The silence was deafening. (except for the beeps and blips of the computers that inundated the enclosed space) "Sir, I don't think that the galaxy has a face" squeeked a timid young man. Slowly, Calidus lowered his arms, face turning red, and addressed the young lady that had previously spoken, "Who are you and can I see you somewhere private?" "Sir, I am Dyana, first officer of El Conqiestador. Your private chambers are through there."Dyana points at a small door to Calidus' left.

As Calidus leads the way into his chambers, he turns and asks Dyana, "Where's my weapon?" Dyana points at the instrument hanging from Calidus' belt. "No, seriously, where's my weapon?" "Sir, that is your life-form nuetralizer. On low setting, it will incapacitate a humanoid for 30 seconds. At full strength, it will incapacitate a humanoid for over 4 hours." "REALLY? This lighter looking thing?"Calidus asks as he turns it over in his hand. "Sir, I must strongly caution you on the use of..." Dyana is quickly cut off as Calidus points it at his chest and pulls the trigger. "Uncivilized oaf, and a sigh of "we are all going to die" are the last things that flicker through Calidus' consciousness

*Four hours later*
"Sir, Messages have arrived." "Dyana, I will take them in my chambers. And, bring me some asprin....I seem to have a sudden unexplainable headache. Must have been something I ate...."

Commander Gaz!

It seems that the subether radio worked and our fleets received their orders after all.

Reports have come in that we successfully captured our objectives.

The fleet awaits your orders for the next wave of attacks.

We have also received Nuclear Annihilation Protocol communications from several nearby starbases.

What is your wish?

"I wish you would disappear and stop shouting nonsense at me " thought Aussie Gaz. "At least carrier pigeons could be eaten after delivering their messages"

Commander Xero Log 01

Post by xero_786 » Tue Jun 10, 2003 4:05 pm

"Erm.. Comander?" came a quiet voice. Commander Xero turned and the young man trembled beneath his gaze.
"Yes?"
"We have acheived our objectives sir. The nuetral planets have fallen all three of them." he said nervously,"and we have begun the training process also sir, like you ordered"
"Good. See to it that the Troops are well nourished. You may leave" Xero turned away.
"Yes sir" the young man saluted and walked out of the room. Xero stood for a while, examining his starcharts, and then smiled. His plan was underway.

Two gaunt figures shared a shadowy part of a room -- one stood, one sat. They both looked extremely comfortable ... peaceful ... as they watched a holographic representation of the sector.

"So, how have your -- uh, primatives -- adjusted to their new surroundings?" the standing one asked.

The sitting one chucked a bit. "Quite well, actually."

"So, they are fitting in to the polite, contemporary society?"

"Not quite ... but then again, this sector they're in isn't really a part of the polite, contemporary society, now is it?"

The standing one took a turn at chuckling. "No, I guess it isn't. But then again, it *is* exactly what you made it to be."

"True."

"So, have they been as aggressive as you were hoping?"

"Moreso, actually," the sitting one said as he gestured toward the holograph. The representation spun in a wide arc and zoomed in on a handful of planets in one of the clusters. "There's actually been conflict between two of them here already. And almost all of the others have overtaken a handful of neighboring planets."

"So, you think your experiment is going to work then?" the standing one said as he walked closer to the holograph and studied the statistics floating in the air.

The sitting one nodded. "Still early to tell, but I think we will learn much from them."

They both chuckled.

What the hell do you mean we only attacked one planet? I ORDERED you to take planet 43 at all costs! Yelled Calidus when the messengers began reporting in.

"Sir, there is no pathway to 43 from 58" squeeked the messenger. Calidus removes his stunner from his belt as zaps the messenger in the chest, and the messenger collapses in a heap on the floor.

"I can see right here on this map that there is TOO a pathway to 43. Are you all Blind?" Calidus continues in his tyrade. Dyana moves swiftly across to the map and peers over Calidus' sholder. Reaching out, she wipes a spot of mustard from the map with a handkerchief. "Do you mean this pathway, Commander?" Dyana sneers haughtily.

*Calidus looks back at the map*

"Oh.....OOPS. Why didn't someone inform me that we had to go through 57 before we could advance on 43? Well? What the heck am I paying you for if you cannot provide me with sound strategic advice?"

"Sir, the conglomerate pays us, you dont" answers the ensign at the helm. *Calidus' hand darts to his stunner, but the ensign passes out from fright before his hand can reach it*

"Ok, gather around. We have some serious work to get done. And someone bring me a ham sandwich with lots of mustard. That stuff is addicting!"........

"Dyana, If you all can whisk me away from Kaomaris, surely you can do the same thing for my axe." says Calidus, wringing his hands in frustration at the report coming from the large screen on the bridge.

"Sir, this is a self contained, climate controlled environment. There is no need for firewood aboard El conquistador. If you feel the climate is unsuitable to your liking, you simply need to instruct the computer to raise the temperature." Chides Dyana.

Calidus shakes his head in disbelief. "I don't intend to cut any firewood, Dyana. What I WANT is my BATTLEAXE. I intend on breaking this streak of incompetence that seems to permeate from the commanders that I have in charge of my field units."

The blood vanishes from Dyana's face as Calidus pulls her aside and informs her of the consequences of future failures. "Sir, I assure you, we shall not fail in our mission again."

"See to it that the commanders do not, Dyana. I have planning to do. You have the Bridge." Calidus turns and heads for his chambers, back to the star charts laying piled upon his desk. Now, where is that pathway to planet 43? Calidus says aloud to himself.....

Commander Xero was in his chambers when the news arrived. A smart rap on the door and Dyana came in.
"Sir we have taken more planets 3 to be precise." "Also we have received a signal from our allies the mothership of LardMaster. They have aborted the campaign, sir."
"Ah" Xero replied "give them our condolences and our next orders are as follows."
"Right sir" she replied after hearing the orders.
"Also send out scouts and tell them to look for allies, we will need then in the distant future. "
"OK sir" and she left the room. Xero lay back down again with the starchart under his nose.

A gaunt figure sat in a chair, looking over a holograph of a starchart and chuckling, when the other entered the room.

"And what do you find so amusing today?" the standing one asked.

The sitting one pointed at a cluster of planets grouped by the same yellow banner. "The stout one, who keeps asking about his axe."

"Still having problems navigating space?" the other probed and stepped closer to the holograph.

"Not any more. He's gotten the knack of that. It's just that he's gone through quite a number of staff members. I think I might need to obtain a few more to backfill for him."

"And how are the Dyana units functioning?"

The sitting one shrugged and nodded. "You did a nice job with those. They're doing everything a trustworthy first officer should. I'm guessing they all assume the Dyanas -- as well as the rest of their staff -- are human."

"It's interesting that you started each of them with the almost the same exact resources, but such different courses of action and results have already come about between them."

"I suppose it is interesting, although not overly unexpected."

The standing one turned to face the other's chair. "And exactly what value do you hope to gain from this experiment?"

The holograph pulled out to a more-encompassing view of the sector. A low, drawn-out chuckle came from the chair.

"Of value?" the sitting one asked.

"Sir, Incoming transmission from one of Xero's emissaries. I believe he seeks peace."

"Oh Really, ensign, and what would give you that idea? Are you suddenly psychic? What am I thinking now, oh psycho boy?" snides Calidus.

"well, sir, he has said in his initial transmission that he wishes to speak to Commander Calidus about a possible cease fire." replys the ensign.

Calidus, chagrinned, says:"Ah. Well done ensign. *Calidus walks over and pats the lad on the back* Well done indeed. Now, to the messenger, ensign. Bring him onscreen."

"Greetings Commander Calidus. Commander Xero sends a peace offering to not invad...." "Sure he does", interrupts Calidus," AFTER he seizes planets in the southern sector. Looks like he's got hostile plans to me."

"But sir, Commander Xero..." *Once again Calidus interrupts the messenger* "well, lad, you can tell Commander xero what I think of his offer." *Calidus pulls his stunner from his belt, and zaps his trustworthy ensign on the shoulder, rendering him unconscious*

Calidus spins from the vies screen, and begins to walk away. "Ensign, remove this from my sight" Calidus turns and sees the ensign slumped at his position, unconscious. Calidus walks back over to the instrument panel, sees about 150 different buttons and justs starts pushing them randomly. Every light on the bridge goes out, with the exception of the view screen. "Dammit Dyana, how do you turn that stupid thing off?"

Dyana mutters, too low for Calidus to hear, as she crosses the bridge in the dark "We are all going to die at the hands of this incompetent fool."

Dyana knocks and listens for a reply at the door of Calidus' private chambers. She knocks a second time, this time more forcefully. Still no response. Raising her foot, she kicks the door, and it flys open with a tremendous crash.

"Commander Calidus?" Dyana inquires as she enters the dark room. NOTHING "Commander Calidus?" Dyana asks into the darkness a second time. Dyana's head whips around as muffled sounds come from the direction of the bed. Dyana draws her stunner, and creeps closer to the bed, only to find it empty. "Commander Calidus?" She speaks for a third time.

Looking like an overgrown turtle peaking its head out from its shell, Calidus pokes his head out from under the bed. "Dyana, is that you? I thought you might be Xero's invasion force, with as much noise as you made coming in here.....and ah.....I dropped my stunner, and it rolled under this here bed. I simply crawled in after it, I mean, I crawled under to get it. " explained Calidus.

Dyana reaches for the lamp beside Calidus' bed, and flips it on. (Laying on the nightstand, is Calidus' stunner.) A wicked grin spreads across Dyana's face, and she replys "Sir, I think your stunner bounced all the way up here onto your nightstand."

"Surely you must have important news, to bother me while I am in my private chamber, Dyana?" Asks Calidus from his position still under the edge of the bed. "Has there been news from Commander Nestalawe?"

"There has", replies Dyana. "Xero's starbase has been liberated, and all of his remaining followers have sworn allegiance to Commander Nestalawe. His invasion into enemy lands has been a smashing success."

*Calidus crawls out from under the bed, and brushes the dust-bunnies off his uniform* "Very well then, lets get back to the bridge and start planning our next move." With that, Calidus strides toward the smashed doorway. "Really, Dyana, you should learn to knock first."

"What news is there Dyana? Why have not my commanders checked in? I do not like being kept in the dark, Dyana."

"Sir, there is too much radiation in the area to allow for normal communications. Calculations indicate an unstable environment, and we are unsure how much longer it will be."

"Very Well, Dyana, I will be in my chambers. Call me once we hear from the fleet."

The gaunt figure in the chair whirled and shot a menacing glare when he sensed the other was standing in the doorway. "Care to explain?!" he asked gruffly.

The other walked slowly toward the holograph and shrugged. "We weren't quite prepared for the level of ... um ... brutality involved," he answered. "Almost all of the 'droids had their self-defense code kick in, and they shut themselves down."

The sitting one turned back toward the action playing out within the holograph. "But how did the Dyana units stay online?"

The standing one cleared his throat. "That model is, um, wired with a higher tollerance for this sort of thing, it seems. And it's a good thing too ... they did a nice job keeping the primatives occupied until we were able to force the other droids back online."

"Will we see any other of these ... unexpected situations?"

"I sure hope not. We've cut all links into the droids self-defenses now. They should suicide themselves as instructed by the primatives."

The sitting one chuckled. "Just in time, too. Look there goes another one!" And he pointed as a StarBase and a series of planets switched from dark blue to dark green.

They both chuckled.

Suddenly the program ends and the hills Commander korexus had been walking round reverted to the small room he'd entered a couple of days earlier. "Sir, sorry to interupt your holoday bue we need you on the bridge now!"

korexus ran through the corridors towards the bridge and burst through the door too concerned by all the worried faces to even look at the huge star chart on the screen.
"What is it? Did Gaz do something unexpected?"
"No sir, he took those undefended provinces just as you predicted. We would have had no problem holding him at the wormhole"
"Would have? Ensign, explain yourself!"
"Our forces were attacked by Commander Massielita, sir."
"Massie? Impossible. We have a, what do you call it, a Nuclear Annihilation Protocol with him!"
"We did sir, but he attacked all the same."

For the first time since entering the room, korexus looked up at the star chart and all the blood drained from his face.
"This is not good. I should have known not to trust Massie again, not after his shady dealings in Skandanavia. But I never thought he'd just outright attack like this. Ensign, I'll be in my ready room, this needs a lot of thought!"

korexus left the room having every other word removed by the content sensor.

The gaunt figure sitting in a chair was chuckling uncontrollably, while the other one was pacing nervously behind him.

"You're going to have to do something," the pacing one was saying, "Even with the severed self-defense code, the 'droids are getting close to shutting down again. They can't handle this level of ... of ... of carnage!!"

The sitting one continued chuckling while pointing at the holograph. "Oh my!! There goes another one!!"

The standing one quickly walked over into the middle of the holograph, purposely taking up the other's line of site. "Are you listening to me?!" Planets hovering next to the standing one's head shifted color from a bright green to a grey.

"Hoo hoo!! And another one!!" the sitting one shouted, pointing ... and continued chuckling.

The gaunt figure paced back and forth behind the chair of the other. "Did they notice?" he asked nervously.

The sitting one rotated and gave the pacing one a measured look. "Notice what? That all sensors were down for three days? That no one on their staff cared to update them or give them a status report ... for THREE DAYS!!"

The standing one stopped pacing and look confusedly at the sitting one. "Um ... no. That all of their staff members have committed suicide, except for the Dyana units. And that the small replacement staff are all based upon the Dyana design?"

The sitting one shook his head. "How am I supposed to know? It's been two days since the outage and nothing has happened. Either they've forgotten what they were here for, don't realize that everything is functioning again for them, or they've burnt themselves out on their own savageness."

The standing one paused and raised a questioning finger. "So do you think that they've noticed then?"

In one quick motion, the sitting one bolted from his chair, covered the distance between them in a single leap, and firmly planted the taser into the other's neck. He stared for a moment at the other lying unconscious at his feet. Then chuckled on his way back to his chair. "Guess I'm learning something from that fellow in yellow."

Settling down in his chair once more, he rotated and zoomed in on the last 4 empires remaining in his fabricated sector of space. "Well ..." he gestured toward the holograph, "Get on with it!!"
