Outbox/Sent Items

I was just wondering what the difference between the "outbox" and "sent items" folders of the message section. Before, the PM's i sent have been moved into "sent items", but now they go to "outbox" instead.
I was wondering what the difference is between the two boxes, and if it has any real effects...

'Sent items' have been received (opened) by the other person.

'Outbox' is things you have written but that the other person has not yet read.
