Duke ... you gonna take him talking about you like that?

;)

p.s. I'm quite jealous that I can't be meeting up with you all in that London pub. I would guess that the beer will be top notch. And I miss out on an opportunity to make a hat from our family stir-fryer.

Han doesn't pop in as frequently as you. That could probably leave a long list to browse through.

Although I guess he could probably decide which threads look interesting by the title and number of replies...

Actually, it's even more mundane than that. I can foresee an annoyance to Kor about 20 lines from now, *shudders*. So does Kor

I'm hit'n'miss. My "method", such as it is, is that I call up the forums, GUESS that anything dated yesterday or today might be new, not remembering exactly when I looked in last. I sigh when it's one I read yesterday. I'm glad when it's a new one.

I may get tied up with a post I want to reply to; I do that, but then run out of time; so never get round to scrolling down further into the lower depths to look for recency of post - and I tend to assume they are just optional joke-areas anyway!

So, nope, I don't use the approach that you, Mull, think is natural. I could switch to your smarter approach ... but: I just might be closer to our average user's mode d'emploi ! ?? (deliberately left it in, what the heck).

Kor-bait (1): One of the reasons that I don't get guided by the autogm informing me of a new post I was watching .... is that sometimes it's my OWN recent post there!! It tells me to go a view a new post, and it's only the one I just put in myself! Don't get all dismissive about maybe I just put in a post there 1 min ago. I multi-task like you guys. I return to inbox after an hour, find an Unread mail that there is a Reply on Thread X, and go view it. And find it's mine of an hour ago! Hey, I'm more bored by it than YOU are!.. SO, I tend to ignore all such topic-reply notifications, no use to me. Just go to the site, and look for latest dates, and scroll down till you find one you answer and run out of time. Very rarely get down as far as Chit Chat!
Kor: I'm sure nobody asked before ... but is there any way of NOT sending out topic-reply notices to the person who posted the post?? So I'll know that any such notifications really are new, and not just MY own last post?! Which tends to stop me bothering to go look. As it prob does you! ;-)

Kor-bait (2)
Kor, you and I together created a brilliant new feature. On the gamepage. You created that any player could post a comment on the turn. But that was ONE comment each, not reviable. And was in player order, so you got replies appeating before the challenges they were answering. I pushed you to make it more like a thread; a plater can comment ... and then add another comment later. AND, crucially, to make it chronologically-downwards as a thread, so that replies came later than questions, and there can be chronological repartee. You did it! Great! (We still fight over my suggestion that the GM ought to be able to join in the thread part-way-through, as chronological answer or repartee).

My Big Question is: Any way that you can NOTIFY members/players/watchers that a new Player-comment has appeared on the gamepage, to go look? It might seem trivial to you, but no: As the GM of many, I try to keep up with the dialogue/repartee/questions to GM that occur in this "new" thread, the one of player comments in the game page. I have no warning that there is any such just posted. I regularly, often after a day or two, call up each game page to see whether there are player comments to enjoy there, or player-queries to reply to there.

This therefore becomes seriously ironic: I am ignoring any forum-post notifications (they might just be making me revisit my own last post?), whilst WISHING I could be notified of any new additions on the player-comments thread on the actual game-page ....

Kor ain't really not gonna be happy ....sorry!

Ok Han. Now go back and read what Mull actually said.

He didn't mention the email notifictaions, he mentioned the recent posts link.

Let's try an experiment.
  • Open up a new copy of your favourite browser (or new tab with in the same browser if that works for you.)
  • Come to the kaomaris site
  • Click on the forums link
  • Click on the link labled "View posts since last visit" (above the list of boards, below the title, on the right)
Knowing the way this works, you've probably just got a page saying "no posts since last visit" but if you go to this link first when you come to the forums, it will show you the posts that you haven't seen yet.

As for the average user, I'd put pretty good odds that 95% of our user base browse the forums this way...

As for changing the notification code. It's possible. But I don't know how easy as it means hacking the forum code about, which is rarely pretty. (personally I don't use the notifications at all. I just read every post. :P)

The issue that I'd have with your other suggestion is that we've only just got our mail servers off the list of spammers. If we start sending out 10 or 11 mails every time someone posts a comment, we may get picked up again.

Nah, don't think so ... If it had been less patronising, I'd have read on to read what you suggested, but you lost me after those first three lines!

I never use it either and just look for new posts by looking for orange things (I am sure someone knows what I mean :D )

I must have some habits left over from my CoN days then too ... I like the "orange things" too ... too bad there aren't "orange things" out in the real world to help guide me.

I must be a simpleton. What orange blobs? I just look at the dates and times on the right hand side and work out which were posted after I last visited.
Question everything.

Far right hand side of each row, when browsing a forum. You'll either get an orange arrow pointint to a white page (read) or an orange arrow pointing to an orange page (unread). Clicking this icon will take you to the most recent post on this thread.

The irony is, I considered this the more complicated method and so suggested the pages since last visit option. Now it turns out many of our users go for this route...

It is more complicated.

It's just that not everybody is able to make their life more simple. :P
