I have to step in here and back Blinky up. I cant see the harm in this, we do this all the time in every single thread.
Is it because he was joking about gays? Seriously, I dont get it.
I'm with you on this one Blinky (even though that sounds strange in this thread by now).
And Allister was the one bringing up the sucking. Blinky only made a bogus headline in a Jerry Springer kind of way.

I don't think we see comments that are that potentially insulting between two posters who don't really know each other at all. Sure, Ben might snipe at me, for instance, but I've known him for over two years and I know that he's harmless. If some newbie came onto the boards and says the same sort of thing it's totally different. I don't think Blinky meant any harm, but he was still out of line. If you think I am wrong, Duke, TK, please feel free to show me an example on the boards where that happened.

Technically, you said "we do this all the time on every single thread". I was disagreeing with that, because we don't. Anyway, I don't think I overreacted. I initially wanted to post that but was going to let it lay until Allister was upset by it, and then I figured I'd back him up and let him know that I at least didn't think he was overreacting. Whatever, I don't think anything can be gained by further discussion on this topic, so let's just fuggedaboudit.

They're Americans Duke...they're scared to death of anything remotely 'gay'.Duke wrote:Is it because he was joking about gays? Seriously, I dont get it.

I think perhaps the crux of the problem may be cultural here more than anything else. Sadly, "gay" is still considered an insult here in the US. I personally find that pretty offensive, as I am against discrimination of any kind, and do make a very concerted effort to stomp out that practice in my classrooms, as jr high age kids tend to be the most likely to use it. For the most part they don't realize it can be offensive either and really do shape up when it's point out to them, but still the point is that it is often considered a negative thing here whereas it might not be so much in other countries, I guess. In any case there's no question that the US has a long way to come on that issue still.Saladin wrote:

Blinky,
I would suggest that you just forget about it and don't come back to this thread. Otherwise you'll just get frustrated about, what you thought, was just a joke. We all learn from our mistakes and learn who to tease who not to tease and what comments people get upset about. So learn and move on. Don't let it bother you anymore people like to drag things on in the boards for kicks(so it seems).

fair enough. I always fight for what I believe in, so if I think someone is wrong, I will tell him. I also think Nick is someone like that so we can go on like this forever. Let's just forget about it and move on.
I'm Blinky and this is my real fur!

Let me clarify. I have absoultely no idea what your intent was (maybe trying to make a bad joke) but the way I read it was still offensive to Allister. Sure, I am against discrimination, but I also know that in the US culture that sort of thing is still viewed as an insult by many people. I wasn't sure how Allister would take it, so didn't say anything at first, but when he took exception to it I backed him up because I could understand why he might be upset, in a cultural sense.Blinky wrote:fair enough. Hopefully that clears it up.....but if not, well, my head is starting to hurt thinking about this so that's enough of this thread I think.

*grabs a handful of popcorn*
"OH, OH, OH he is arguing with a brit and is bringing up US culture as a good thing. This HAS to bring fuel to the flamer"
*reads the rest of the post*
"Aaaawwhhh. Dont stop now! It just got going!"
Seriously guys. This isnt even an argument. Ask Ben and he'll tell you. Yes I know I am bringing a dead thread back to life but I just read the stuff that was added after I last posted here and like Threwq mentioned I need to be involved everywhere so
