GM Chris Group 01!

Post by korexus » Fri Jan 30, 2004 1:36 pm

Here you are, after many fun times trying to sort out internet/network settings. And in one case even doing a Duke* on the router. I have a wonderful, shiney, new internet connection!

And as promised, I've now opened up my first game. Gaz just opened a WoK 5 game, so I've gone for WoK 4. You can find the page at http://www.gmchris.kaomaris.com/group01.html or check on kaobase. Email me, GM_Chris@kaomaris.com, to join. And please let me know if you spot any problems with the page!

korexus.

*For those of you too young in the Ways of WoK to remember. "Doing a Duke" involves trying to fix a problem in the most direct way possible, preferably with the advice of other WoKitos (in my case TK) who should know as little as possible about the subject at hand. Needless to say, our strategy of "flip that switch, then run away if it starts making bad noises" wasn't as succesful as it could have been...

Good job !

I want to add GM Chris has now activated his subdomain subscription with WOK and thus helps us generate continuous revenue to cover the server expenses.

There are also no popups or other nagging things on his site, so I guess we all can be happy....

And php. Don't forget that. I'm starting to really like that language. Much more fun than Java... *shudder*

3 spots left folks. And I already had to turn one person away too. Get a move on!!

Close, but you could have just checked the website instead :P

So far we have no BoV at all, (But Funty'll be asleep and trewqh wants his WoK 5...)
Raw's in, X-Wing's in. Smashy and Sal are probably in although there are allegations of SF's girlfriend wanting one of those spots... The others are Allister Fiend, Validon, Grave Maker and some random called Xarfei.

That makes two spaces left. Nobody from the Brotherhood or DoW though as yet.

GM Chris.

**Edit. After posting I checked my inbox to find that Mylantis wants in too. That leaves one spot folks. Who's going to get it? Will the game fill in under 2 hours? DOes anyone get the idea people should be running more games?**

Yep, having skipped a couple of games starting, I saw this one within, oh, 2 hours of it opening........I mail Chris for one of the last 2 slots......check back and it's simultaneously gone down to one last slot!

Sounds like we really do need more GM'ing. I'll do some when Rune makes it as easy as he says he will......

It's official. Hanibal takes the last slot. I should be able to run turn 00 today. :)

Just under 2 hours, from announcing the game to it filling. That has to be some sort of record...

Actually what we need is a different system of singing up for a game. The way we do it now is that first come first served. But like you said...some people are in bed right now and some people are online all the time and fill up every single game there is (like me :D). So what i propose is that a waitinglist is kept open for at least 2-3 days so that everybody gets a chance to sign up. Now if you have more than 10 people sign up, just look at in how much games they are now, or check to see how much games they've already played (would be great to have such stats on a webpage all the time Bjorn :D) and grant the spot to somebody who's not played as much instead of game crazy people like Raw and me. :D

I'm very happy to take the last slot (Chris just emailed me with a yes), but I agree with Sal. We risk the same 15 or so players filling up every game, and those who only check the boards as infrequently as once every 3 hours, or less (!) missing out nearly every time. For the benefit of less-frequent board-watchers, as well as Sal's idea of keeping the list open longer for the GM to choose, could we also maybe mail the whole membership list when a new game opens (similar to topic replies) - it might serve to prompt lapsing players into joining in again, and give us more variety in games.

And it would save me having to go on board-patrol to get a game!

AHHH Poop, I guess that's what I get for sleeping in. I would still rather see a beginner game open up soon. There are currently 0 beginner games. I know Korexus can't do anything about it though this being his first game. I also don't want to sound like the Nag, but....

There have not been a lot of game starts recently, so there is a real demand for new games right now. We seem to go through these phases where games won't fill for a couple of weeks (usually this is associated with a beginner game or an X-game with some special rule people don't like) to times when a regular game will fill in less than a day.

I would like to suggest that any time a GM opens a game he takes names for 48 hours or so to give the clan heads time to contact members and see if they want to sign up. Then the GM should look at the KAOBASE and see how many games these people are already playing. Take the people who are in the fewest current games and/or games close to ending.

Of course, a GM can fill the game any way they wish. This is just a suggestion. Note that a GM is never obligated to accept a player into a game. Just like any business, you can refuse to accept any customer. Card counting in Blackjack is perfectly legal, but if the casino decides that you are too good at they have every right to tell you that you can't play there anymore.

I see another call for Kaobase V2 coming here. If there is a list of how many games each player is currently in, it will make it nice and easy for a GM to decide who to let in. Going through all the active players in all the active groups is a little bit more work...

If we could get that feature in a Kaobase, great, but we'd have to make sure to watch out for games like the ones Andy was running but are on hold- technically I am in one of those, but since it is in stasis, I am effectively in zero games now. Too, having clan heads track what games their members are in might be another solution, I know Bjorn does that for VO and it helps keep things nice and neat. I stole that idea from some clan in fact- CoN or the Scholars I think not entirely sure.....

Donut is not a beginner since he won a VP :)

How about a very simple solution to this while KBv2 is not here.

Players have to include the number of active games in which they are in the application :)

One feature of the kaobase will be a player search page. That page will give some basic information about the player, including which games the player is currently in. This will at least give the GM a chance to check if the player is playing in one or ten games at the same time. You will also get a history of which games the player has been in and how (s)he scored.

The kaobase is progressing fine btw. I have now completed the design of most functions and have started to make the pages actually do something. This part is actually quite easy since I have already built the classes that do most of the work here. So expect to do some testing soon.
