Sure!
But what are you going to use it for? And what are your preferences?
Do you want a small light laptop or a big and more powerful one?

Primarily it should be quick enough to support all the tasks below, but not allowing enough time to do 100 push ups with an elephant on my back...

Transportable with wireless connection although weight isn't a major concern,
Graphics to allow for:- Watching the odd DvD and Html based online gaming of WoK and alliancewars,
Capacity through spreadsheets and databases to run a small business,
word proceesing for writing stories,
digital photos

I hope this has helped, all and any help is hugely appreciated...

You should buy a computer with 1gb ram. Anything less will be a waste of money. All laptops are ok for watching movies, but make sure it has a dvd-player installed. Some cheap laptops only have cd-burners or even only cd-rom players.

In your price class this Dell can be interesting (Dell Inspiron 1300): http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/produ ... l=en&s=dhs
The one to the left (as of today, Dell change their prices often) at £468 seems ok. It has enough memory, a big harddrive, a dvd-burner, a widescreen monitor (ok for watching movies, not so good when writing documents), and both wired and wireless network included.

It's not the most powerful computer, but its cheap and its not too heavy (around 3kg). I like Dells computers, but some hate them. So its your choice...:)

I don't know about Dell laptops but I don't really like the desktop Dell my mom has in her room :x.

I myself have an hp laptop and even with 256Mb RAM (although more would be nice) I have no problems doing the things I use my laptop for (which along with Hryll's list inlcudes 3D computer games, amatuer music production). I am very satisfied with its performance. When it started slowing down horribly about a month ago it was enough to clean out the dust that gathered inside after a year of using and everything was great afterwards. Had some hassle with setting up WLAN (wireless network/internet), though, but I suppose anyone with Windows will get that.

I'd add a long lasting battery to Mullog's list of important things.

Dell desktops are horrible, but their laptops are ok. :)

An extra battery is a Good Thing (tm), but its not as important as it used to be. A new laptop will last around four hours on a single battery (even my big laptop, a Dell Inspiron 9300 with a 17" monitor, lasts more than three hours), but an extra battery is always nice.

You're lucky!

My laptop was supposed to last 4.5 hours on battery power, but I guess this is only true when it's turned on but not used. Whereas when I don't have access to a socket I only turn the laptop to actually use it. :P When I use it it rarely reaches 2 hours (thankfully, that's long enough to play a concert.)

You mean there are no decent laptops below 500 or you won the lottery? :)

I dont understand the bad opinion ppl have with Dell.

1) Their desktop cases are superior to ANY OTHERS bar none, no screws, all clik and caches

2) Repair services, fantastic, next day pick up and replace within a week

3) Prices are better than anything I could build myself for a budget computer, their high-end computers thoug hare a little expensive
