WOK-ON Commentary

Post by trewqh » Fri Feb 10, 2006 2:47 pm

Korexus, Hannibal and I are working on making the automated commentary a bit more 'lively' and fun to read. Therefore we would like everyone reading this to suggest their commentary lines for situations when a player goes M-1, M-2, QUIT or does a reorg (nothing visible).

Here are the currently coded lines which should start appearing in commentaries for upcoming turns:

M-1

... is confused with the situation and goes M-1
... misses his/her first turn
... decides to miss his/her first turn
... is busy playing with the fairies and goes M-1
... ducks for cover and goes M-1"
... decides to give the others a chance, and goes M-1
... assesses his/her chances realistically and decides to go M-1
... is so confident that he takes a turn of M-1
... sees who's gunning for him and immediately goes M-1
... inhales. Goes M-1 ?
... remarks, "Oh, was I supposed to send in orders?", and goes M-1
... barks unintelligible orders, and goes M-1.
... confuses his/her troops, and misses a turn.
... is hung over from last night, and misses a turn. ?

M-2

... has morale problems and goes M-2
... is stuck down the rabbit hole and goes M-2
... is nowhere to be found and goes M-2
... is still assessing the situation and goes M-2
... plays possum and goes M-2
... keeps them guessing by going M-2
... gives his neighbours a quandary by going M-2
... confuses his/her troops, and misses a turn.
... is hung over from last night, and misses a turn. ?

QUIT

... has quit
... is abducted by aliens and quits
... flees the battlefield screaming and quits
... runs away to join the circus and quits
... joins a rock-band and quits
... decides to go look for Al Gassner and quits
... bolts

DOES NOTHING

... sends orders in but does nothing visible
... prepares for upcoming turns doing nothing visible
... re-organises/does nothing visible
... slinks around behind the scenes, doing nothing visible
... assesses the situation and does nothing visible
... has another drink and does nothing visible
... laughs at all the raucous and does nothing visible
... continues to sleep, doing nothing visible
... moons everyone, doing nothing visible
... ignores the fighting and does nothing visible
... decides not to join the fighting and does nothing visible

ATTACKS

... barrels through ...
... conquers ...
... launches a successful assault against ...
... wins ...

I think you know what I mean.

I will copy your suggestions into this post and then after deciding which ones are proper some (or all?) of them will be coded into the WOK-ON game engine (by me! 8) ) .

2006.02.11 Let us know if you find any of these inappropriate. I will mark these with a question mark. The same goes for the ones that could use better wording.

Thanks for the contributions made so far! :D

You may want to change "his" to "his/her"

...remarks, "Oh, was I supposed to send in orders?"
...barks unintelligible orders, and goes M-1.
...confuses his/her troops, and misses a turn.
...is hung over from last night, and misses a turn.

Hey guys (and gals), I have a request: can we make it funny but keep it clean?

I'm far from being a prude myself, but it's different once you have kids. My 13 and 11-year-olds wanted to play, and my 9 year-old can now access the site just to see how Daddy's doing ....

My older boys wanted to actually play, when they and lots of their classmates and sleepovers used to follow my Turn Reports, and we could have started a junior section, with some of them staying with us for years .... but when Raw "inserted" his "Rock out with your cock out" into his sig, plus toy jokes, I banned them all from the site, stopped sharing my TR's with them, and killed their interest. (That sig was in any way funny anyway?!). Hmm, I'd better edit/delete the details here once the point is made.....

Raw, I seem to remember you have a small child now. Think ahead and think of others, please.

Come on you guys, if any of you agree with me, say so here, OK? Don't just leave it to me. Same if you disagree.

Cheers,
Han

This is great. All I did as my suggestion #11 on the "WoK and its future ..." thread, was to say that "Comatus does nothing", "Delirius does nothing" etc., was a boring and off-putting way for the engine to describe a player who was playing but did no attacks, particularly for any new prospect looking in, who might think the game looked dead or dull...

I suggested "Comatus does a reorg/ does nothing visible", as a simple improvement, but this is much better and more fun.

And it's a great thread.

I offer to Trewqh's pot:
" ... runs away to join the circus and quits"
" ... joins a band and quits" (an in-joke, T.?)
" ... ducks for cover and goes M-1"
" ... is still assessing the situation and goes M-2"
" ... decides to give the others a chance, and goes M-1"
" ... assesses his chances realistically and decides to go M-1"
" ... plays possum and goes M-2"
" ... keeps them guessing by going M-2"
" ... gives his neighbours a quandary by going M-2"
" ... does a French and goes M-1" (maybe not!)
" ... is so confident that he takes a turn of M-1"
" ... sees who's gunning for him and immediately goes M-1"
" ... inhales. Goes M-1"

And maybe:
" ... discovers the Scholars' Manual and decides to sleep, so does nothing even remotely visible" (just teasing, don't use it!)

Cheers,
Han

Actually Raw, I back Han up here.

We need to keep it clean here guys or we will scare players off (or attract people we dont necessary want here). Oh, and you could forget female players as well.

We used to have moderators that censored things. Where are those these days?

I take responsability for some under the belt jokes but I'll be straight from now on.

Sorry guys.

I agree that we should keep it clean --- I was thinking more about female players than kids, but I guess it works for both.

I am sure Raw can control himself. Well, at least I think I'm sure. :)

BTW, how about alternative choices for ATTACKS?

... barrels through 23, 24, and 28.
... conquers 10, 12, and 15.
... launches a successful assault against 23 and 22.

etc.....

korexus is trying to figure out how to make commentary of attacks more sophisticated but that requires some more complicated coding so we don't know the examplary syntax of such commentary yet.

Anyhow, good ideas!

If I have a small child out there, I haven't met him/her yet. I think my wife would be upset though :P

Women?! In WoK?!! OMG, that would be sooo awesome! :P

I guess I'm the moderator now. Al, Sal, TK and Nick all have mod status but aren't here enough to use it. - Anyone want the job?

Re: attacks, we can add more comments easily enough, but the way the missing turn comments are done is random. - It would be nice to have the comments describe the fight. (Crushes the defenders, sends a scout, wins by a narrow margin, etc) So if you want to add ideas for what circumstances should be mentioned to the pot, go for it.

you stupid

To go back to the debate, it took me a while to work out what "M-1" was.

Depends what public you're aiming at really, I guess most of the site's users are fairly familiar with all its jargon, but if you want to make the whole game more accessible then it is certainly a good idea to use a terminology that even the thickest philistines (like me) can access

I'm a mod but I'm not sure I qualify for enforcing the rules of the boards. The amount of taboo language and foreign languages (which the rules also ban) on this forum does not disturb me in anyway.

I will add propostions for ATTACK commentaries to the inital post.

korexus.
Actually, I think we had 4 women playing WOK at the same time. Dyana, Queen Pea, Ingrid (forgot if she had a player name), and someone else who came just after them (don't recall the name). I don't think Dorothy from Kansas counts, since he was a guy, but that gets my vote for the best name I've seen.

And sorry for this question Ada, but are you a gal or a guy? There is a woman at my work with that name --- same spelling.

Ingrid went under the name of Tomb Raider.

I think the other women/girl you are talking about is Angel Girl but I am fairly sure we had two more.

Someone with the name of *checkes the Kaohalla* could it have been Covenant? I think Nova was a girl too. Or a guy saying he is a girl. *thinks* They could all have been guys saying they are girls. Or we are all girls telling everyone we are guys.

Lets have a poll. How many went and checked if philistines actually originated from palestine? Bring it down to our stupid level again Ada. Please? 8)

Oh, and I feel we need a working WSC and working Moderators. Do we have a working WSC? Moderators should be easy. Toss the quitters moderator status and give it to active people. T-man is here so he can stay but we need like 3 and at least one should be on US time so that we have it all covered. Do I hear volounteers? *Looks at Egbert*

No replies within 12 days so I guess we're done with this.

Tomorrow I'll get to coding the list into the game engine the way it is now, excluding the ones I have doubts about - we have enough (and funny too!), so we don't really need these ones.

Korexus, let me know if you think that the list we have now is too much for reasons I don't yet understand with my php knowledge. :)

Aw shucks. You mean to miss out all those you ?'ed ?

And there was me being proud of having the shortest offering, a single word (before the "and goes ....." bit):

"Inhales." ..... and goes M-1/M-2 etc.

I really don't mind if it bites the dust .... as you say, you have plenty. But I'm intrigued. Is it that you don't get it? (It's a reference to Clinton having said that, yes, he was seen smoking a joint as a student .... but he says he never actually inhaled). But no joke survives explanation. Or maybe you thought the drugs reference was in bad taste (but kids wouldn't "get" it anyway).

Oh well. Not important. But I still want the record for the shortest, so pls add "Bolts." into your list (fits M-1 or Quits)

I didn't think of Clinton but I did see how it can be amusing by itself. And, yes, I thought it was in bad taste. My reasoning was that even if kids don't get the drugs reference they can easily associate it with cigarettes. Even though I don't have children or younger siblings I can easily imagine children starting to play with the idea and pretend/roleplay smoking in front of other children or their parents stimulated by the Auto-GM. ("Haha! Look what they wrote about me! Look, I'm smoking!") Maybe I'm exaggerating but I think you see the point why I decided we don't need this one.

I officially anounce Hannibal the author of the shortest comment for coming up with "Bolts"! :)

I'll add it to the QUIT category so that it doesn't need any additional explanation afterwards. (Unless it has some other meaning than 'escaping' that I didn't get.)
