Step-by-step into WOK

Post by gm_al » Mon May 09, 2005 3:20 pm

Looking at how a colleague from work tried to get into WOK I could witness that we need to work on this part of our online community for good....

I strongly suggest a GUIDED step-by-step process online (within the site) that would lead a new player from scratch into his first waitlist, along the lines

1. click a link to signup into WOK
2. enter mail etc.
3. confirm signup
4. now pick your Clan from a list and apply for one
5. Clan registration has been confirmed, now go to pick your first game here

... or similar. The way it is now is way to complicated and stops people interested to join up easily.

PS: Griffon please accept ODESSA into the Clan, and Funty please have him signed up for the new WOKON game.

Agreed... I've sent about 3-4 e-mails to new players describing how to join a clan. Oh, and that's not Funty's game :P But I'll add him anyway. Here's an excerpt from what I've been sending out... Note that it has specific references to BoV that you may want to change.
Like you said, first thing you need to do is join a clan. To do: From the main page, click on MY LOBBY (we really need to make that non-caps). Once there you can click on the Clans tab right below where it says "Hi Donut of The Brotherhood of Vayuna" (hopefully it doesn't say that for you). There you can browse through the members of each clan, and choose one to join. Theres a "Apply here" button or something like that that if you click on it it will e-mail the clan head your application and they should be able to get back to you pretty quick.

Now for whom to join... I'm obviously partial to The Brotherhood of Vayuna (BoV) as that is the clan that I am in. We have a few players who have been around for ages, as well as a couple of new players. If you would like to join us we would be glad to have you. But, there are also other very good clans around. The Scholars probably have the most active players, and the Vulkings are our somewhat WOK4 Specialists. You can really learn a lot from either of these clans and they're all pretty nice people to talk to. Another thing that may sway your opinion is the open game that we have now. I opened it a few days ago and since then have had 2 members of BoV join; this means that if you join BoV you would have to wait for another list to open up because we limit each game to 2 clan members. I would hope that another game would open soon, but it's never a guarantee... and I just got yelled at for opening too many games :( .

After you get into a clan, it's pretty much necessary to read the manual. It's not nearly as long as other game manuals that I've read... but it's kinda boring. It is really important to read in order to understand what is happening in a game. From there you learn a lot from experience.

Sorry for the novel. Hope it helps though.

Donut. Youre solid as a rock when it comes to greeting noobs. And I am not even joking this time (I'm really not)

Muchos gracias. I think someone mentioned a n00b welcoming party in another thread. I'd be happy to take part in it. Seeing as how most of my friends claim not to be geeks, or just don't want to take part in my addiction, I can't really recruit people to play.

Attention new players
Donut's suggestion will now work. If you tried this before and got nowhere then it was my fault. (Players who didn't already have a clan entry were not being added to the players table.)

I've manually entered Protput and Odessa as the players I've heard of/from, anyone else who has recently turned up and applied to a clan but heard nothing, it may be worth applying again as it is more than likely that the clan head never got your first application...

if i could only add: it should really be made clear that first i need to sign up to the kaomaris site, and then apply to a clan. otherwise you get an error message when you click the apply button. or maybe i have overlooked something... (maybe just mention it again near the "apply" button)
