Failed delivery mail

Post by Underdog » Thu Sep 30, 2004 11:00 pm

I got the strangest mail today.

It claims that GM Pat@kaomaris sent a mail to GM Ryan@Kaomaris.

Now as much as I enjoy talking to Raw I KNOW I haven't sent him any mail in a LONNNNNGGGGGGG Time. does anyone know anything about this? The mail was another gibberish message kinda like when the Newslatter came out and I got gibberish.

Should I be worried about this?

I've had two of them now. One yesterday and one today. Both claiming to be a failed send from GM_Chris to GM_Dom both @kaomaris.com.

My guess is that some virus propagator has picked up the GM email addresses and is trying to send itself out but the mail server thingy is bouncing them back. As you can't actually send emails direct from your GM account (and as I've had the same thing happen) it's probably not your computer at fault. It could be some player who's been in games by you, Raw, Smashface and myself and uses the text based AOF sender and has a virus of some form but almost certainly it's a web based job spoofin our email adresses. It sucks but there's not a whole lot we can do about it.

Having said that, if anyone falls into the above profile it's probably worth running a virus check just in case...

As for being worried. As long as you don't try to run the gibberish you got you should be fine. I find deleting that sort of thing is the bestr option. ;)

I already e-mailed Al today about getting the same "bounce-back." Mine was to GM Larry; and I know that I wouldn't talk to him :P . I would only have to venture to say that it would have something to do with the Hack of the site not too long ago. That's my guess.

You are not alone! :)

Someone, not you, but someone you once send an email to has been infected by the Beagle virus.
Read here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... ar@mm.html

The virus will spoof the sender email by selecting a random adress from the infected computer, and that is why you guys got the bounce-backs.

Funny huh?

A coworker here once got replies for mails where he appearantly had been promoting lolita-porn!!! So spreading viruses is nothing. ;)

Oh, and btw. If you don't have a virus scanner installed, download one for free here: http://www.avast.com

I got two emails also.

Both supposedly from Gm Gaz to GM Han.

Yahoo blocked both and said that there was a high probability of a virus being in the attachment.

I expect that all GM's will probably end up with the same happening to them.

I don't think the problem lies in the computers of GMs. I think the virus must taken both the sender and recipient (sp?) addresses from somewhere within kaomaris. GMs can not use their kaomaris addresses to send out e-mails. This is only for redirection.

I got a bounceback from Underdog - gm_pat@kaomaris.com.

Notice that the 2 GM addresses are always next to each other.

Hope this helps you catch the killer....erm I mean virus.
