Ok, I didn't think that there was much enthusiasm for this, so I haven't posted another in a while. Well, that and I was on vacation for over almost two weeks, and didn't even think about it.

How about:

Would you prefer to live in the city, or the country?

I would prefer the country, but still be close enough to civilization that I could go to a decent sized city on occassion. My wife would prefer to live in the city, or at least nearer to the city that I prefer. So we compromised, and live in the suburbs!

Well in Holland most cities would be called small towns in the US. Personally i live in Veenendaal (voted greenest city in Europe a while back) which gives me the benefit of having access to almost all things you would need from a city but with the 'feel' of a village.

The country definitely is not for me. I like to be able to hop on my bike and get to anywhere i want in my town in 15 minutes.

I have lived in the cities of Leeds, Milton Keynes and London as well as three countrified villages. But which do I prefer?

For beauty and safety its the country.
For convenience of day to day living its the city.

I would like I think to live in the country, but it would have to be at least two miles to the nearest neighbour and further still to a pub. That way I get to listen to nothing but nature. Ahhh, I can see it now ....

Personally i feel that living in the city is a whole lot safer than living in the country. At least in the city you're pretty close to any help you might need. In the country you can die and people won't find you till years later.

i'd live in the country all by myself. Issolated from civilization as long asi had my computer to order food and other neccesities with and a radio and phone wouldnt bother me one bit as long as their arent any cows mooing anyway

I grew up in a smallish city (65,000) and I'd have to say I prefer that over either big city or country. However I've never really lived in a big city, and my only experience in the country is with my pops who lives in the middle of nowhere in the North woods of Wisconsin.

When you are young, under 18 or so, I would say the country. From 18 until you start wanting kids then the city. Once you have kids back to the country.

I grew up in the country and would never move back! Even the smallish town where I live now (about 45000 people) is better.

45000 people would be okay. Imagine a pop of 10 million, where no-one talks to you or smiles, hardly anything green (except for peoples teeth), muggings, rapes, murders, tricksters, 1/2 the place where you are scared to walk on your own, covered in filth and graffiti and you have a large city. Countryside any day. Or do I just have issues with London?

I visited London last summer. Stayed there for a month and I loved the number of parks you have there, so I wouldn't agree with that point. I was lucky enough not to experience any of the other things you mentioned.

You though London had lots of greenery? Jeez Trewqh I would hate to live where you do!!!!! look up Yorkshire on the internet. Thats green as far as i am concerned. The odd park does not do it for me.

The country for me except to shop for clothes, shoe's handbags etc....

I lived near Crystal Palace but even when I was in the very centre of London I got the impression that there was a park within a 5 minute's walk from anywhere. That's something even if you don't have vast primeval forests just outside of your city as I do

The key to England is that the further north you go, the better it is and the cheaper the living costs, unfortunately wages drop too, so you need to move north gradually if you're going to live out your dotage comfortably...

PS. Visit London is only in there so you can appreciate the rest. If you want the optimal experience, choose Oxford instead.

Yes but bear in mind that ... according to Inspector Morse and Lewis the population of Oxford should all have been murdered by 2012. With at least two locals per episode it wont take long, especially if you are an academic.

The trick is Chris, to move to London and get the London weighting allowance, then move back North and they can't take it off you. That'll be me in about 6 months time
