There is a bottle of wine which is 3/4 full. How do you leave an amount of wine exactly 1/2 of the capacity of the bottle, without using any other containers or utensils?

You drink the same amount that is already gone (1/4 more), leaving 1/2 bottle.

Nope. You need to get to 1/2 exactly. You can estimate it by drinking, but that's not good enough!

:) Very nice, Donut! Just lay the bottle down, let the excess wine pour out (put mouth underneath if you care to do so), and you have half the wine left.

Wouldn't that leave you with less than half the wine :?:

Surely it would drain out until the wine was at the same level as the bottom of the neck of the bottle which should leave it quite a bit less than half full. It's late, maybe I'm missing something... :?

Here's one from me though.

Two men and a woman are stuck in a lift on a hot day. One of the men has 3 bottles of water and the other man has 5. The woman doesn't have any. As it's hot they drink all the bottles of water which they share equally. When they get out of the lift the woman decides to pay the two men for sharing the water, she has 8 pound coins (or dollars, or whatever you like). What is the fairest way for her to split the money between the two men?

Fine, put your finger over half of the opening. You'd think if you were to think about how it would pour out, you'd think about the finger :P

Well, you could also say that that is where the cork goes, so for the most part, you are still getting half the capacity of the bottle.

She gives the bold fat guy the 8 pound coins and pays the other good looking guy 'au naturel'? :P

LOL

well they all drank 8/3 of the water so she pays the guy wth 3 bottles 1 dollar for his 1/3 she drank and she pays the one with 5 bottles 7 dollars for his 7/3 she drank.

I should have remembered where I was posting before I asked...

Massie has it though, 7:1 is the correct ratio, you're all either too clever to think that the answer that 5:3 would work or too lazy to bother posting!
